SIDCO's Southport, NC Crew
Founded in February 2018, the SIDCO Southport Division, lead by Field Operations Officer Kevin Mercer, has grown steadily into a fully functional arm of the organization. SIDCO has grown since its founding in 1995 and the Southport Division has shown the most growth in the least amount of time.
Today’s underwater archaeologist is an intrepid, fearless personality who faces many dangers on the shipwreck. In the face of deep, often dark, water, where structure can fall and trap divers, our team continues to risk life and limb to preserve history and present our heritage to a new generation. Today’s youth are faced with drugs, video games and all the failures of modern civilization. In this environment of distractions, it is the mission of SIDCO to pass on the love of history to our children and the Southport Division is already reaching them with metal detector classes and simulated excavations.
In the Southport Wooden Boat Show, the Southport Division was proclaimed “Best in Show” as they taught our youth and issued certificates to the next generation of SIDCO Team Members. The recovery of endangered artifacts are seen in the photos as well as the close relationship the Southport Division has built with the area young people documents a great start for Kevin and his well-chosen team.
